ABC - Inspiring a Love of Reading

At Ruxley Manor, since Autumn 2022 we have been supporting ABC Book Club by hosting a Book Drop Off Point here on site!

ABC Book Club is a charity that works with local communities to collect donations of good quality pre-loved children’s books which are then redistributed to primary school libraries. As well as re-donating 1000s of books per month, ABC also builds libraries in primaries that don’t have one.

With reading for pleasure cited as having more of an impact on a child’s outcomes than the child’s socio-economic background, with your help we can support ABC’s work to improve young lives.

ABC’s Achievements To Date

Since inception, ABC Book Club has donated over 200,000 books to primary schools throughout SE London and North Kent. Local families donate books that have been outgrown by their young owners and are gathering dust on shelves and in attics. ABC ensures they get into the hands of a whole new audience of children many of whom may not own a single book of their own.

"We are delighted to partner with Ruxley Manor Garden Centre, a true multi-generation SE London destination. Ruxley has kindly allowed ABC to use its old ice cream hut as a book drop where families can bring their pre-loved books to donate to us.

You can’t miss the hut on the way into Ruxley just before the main car park. Look out for the colourful ABC signage and bring your bags and boxes of books to post through the drop slot for the charity to donate to local schools and organisations that need our help."

ABC’s Impact Report

ABC Book Club has been collecting pre-loved children’s books donated by the public and re-distributing them to local schools since 2018. We help get high quality books into the hands of children who might not otherwise have access to them.

As well as facilitating the access of books, ABC has taken on multiple comprehensive refurbishment projects in collaboration with schools to provide quiet spaces and libraries where children can read for pleasure.

The focus moving forward is to support an even larger number of schools, supply a wider selection of diverse and inclusive books, and to continue to provide books for children to enjoy at home.
